Error 1722 getting session names
I’ve been trying to get the cmd prompt’s msg command. At my friends house we tried communicating between two computers on the same WiFi network. We couldn’t get it to work so when I got home I tried between my laptop and desktop, one WiFi one Ethernet. All 4 are Windows Pro. I cannot, for the life of me, get it to work in any way. With desktop names, IPV4 addresses, even tried messaging the whole server.
When I type from my laptop to my desktop I get:
C:Usersitsme>msg * /server
ESKTOP-BLAHBLAHBLAH «hi»
Error 1722 getting session namesFrom my desktop to laptop I tried using the IPV4:
C:Usersitsme>msg * /server:192.168.blahblahblah «hi»
Error 1722 getting session names
When I try messaging the whole server:
C:Usersitsme>msg * «hi»
It only messages the machine I send it from.
I have gone to both’s registries and both have AllowRemoteRPC set to 1.I haven’t tried it between two different users yet, does that matter? My friends computers were also getting the same error message.
I don’s know what topic this should go under so I am sorry if it is incorrect.

It is in a DOMAIN dear friends
But did you visit that link ?
Yes but it did not help me
It is maybe a problem of firewall …
Does msg.exe uses a specific port ?
Are you sure you don’t have terminal services running? This is a dependancy for this to run.
I assume this is the exact error you receiving.
«Error [1722]:The RPC server is unavailable.» you need to add a registry key.
HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlTerminal Server
Name: AllowRemoteRPC
Type: REG_DWORD
Value : 1
This enables remote RPC. RPC is port 135.
Then try «msg * /server:<domainname> «message» this will broadcast on your domain.
msg.exe does not seem to work in all cases !

Thanks for replying. Yes, msg.exe runs using the «RpcSs» Service. Can you run «sc query RpcSss | FIND «STATE» » and display it’s output?
the sc query says that RpcSss does not exist as an installed service …

Try dropping the last s and try it again.
No answer solving my problem
Sorry about that, I had many other tasks to do, and this one was not a top priority
I will come on it soon
sc query rpcss state is RUNNING
still get error 1722
Can you post a example of the command you are using. You can omit exact domain and username using a generic format instead as long as it shows exactly what your typing for the command.
I am logged on server Windows 2008
Its name is zavnt302 and the account I am logged on is vobadm
I have another PC, named h3ysh2j where I am logged on as taymans
From the server, I issue this : msg taymans /server:h2ysh2j «Hello World !»
I get the error 1722
From the server, I issue now : msg vobadm /server:zavnt302 «Hello World !»
I get the broadcast popup message
From the PC, I issue this : net send taymans «Hello World !»
I get the broadcast popup message
Well I looked further at the problem. This usually occurs when the issuer does not give «domainuser» in the command. So try entering the command «msg «h2ysh2j taymans» /server:h2ysh2j «Hello World !» » and for the other «msg «zavnt302vobadm» /server:zavnt302 «Hello World !»». See if that resolves your issue.
We are in a real domain
I tried both your syntax and also with domainuser
The first (msg to other computer) failed both ways
The second (msg to local) failed (did not without) with this : zavnt302vobadm does not exist ir is disconnected…
Ok, Hmm, that is how the error message is diagnosed directly from MSDN. Thought it was worth a try. Well I do know it’s a drastic change in the protocol used. May need to look into it some more and since your method works on both servers but not the XP workstation, if no real workaround exists then there maybe a 3rd party service that you can install that supports all platforms involved. Just a thought.
The more I look at this. It becomes apparent that XP either is not setup correctly, incompatible to receive msg.exe RCP traffic like this or is getting blocked, since the server to server works fine. I would lean towards XP being the main problem and point all troubleshooting in this direction.
Thanks for the investigation but what can I do now at client side ?
Is your XP client setup correctly as a terminal client role? Msg.exe runs on RPC protocol and Terminal Services. This being said it utilitizes port «3389». Which is also known as Remote Desktop Protocol. Do you have this enabled??? We already know RPC service is running from previous posts.

PS C:Users> Test-NetConnection dc07 -Port 135
ComputerName : dc07
RemoteAddress : 10.91.101.17
RemotePort : 135
InterfaceAlias : Ethernet0
SourceAddress : 10.91.101.7
TcpTestSucceeded : True
ID 5008: The DFS Replication service failed to communicate with partner DC1 for replication group Domain System Volume. This error can occur if the host is unreachable, or if the DFS Replication service is not running on the server.
Partner DNS Address: DC1.pyatilistnik.org
Optional data if available:
Partner WINS Address: DC1
Partner IP Address: 192.168.1.26
The service will retry the connection periodically.
Additional Information:
Error: 1722 (The RPC server is unavailable.)
Connection ID: 9BBE21A2-46E3-4444-9D40-2967F4BA3400
Replication Group ID: E9198376-3944-4218-89BE-D4EC89CA73E8
ID 5004: The DFS Replication service successfully established an inbound connection with partner DC1 for replication group Domain System Volume.
Additional Information:
Connection Address Used: DC1
Connection ID: 9BBE21A2-46E3-4C74-4444-2967F4BA3400
Replication Group ID: E9198376-39FD-4444-89BE-D4EC89CA73E8
SyncAll reported the following errors:
Error contacting server CN=NTDS Settings,CN=DC1,CN=Servers,CN=Holding,CN=Sites,CN=Configuration,DC=Pyatilistnik,DC=org (network error): 1722 (0x6ba):
The RPC server is unavailable.
……………………. DC1 failed test Connectivity

Got error while checking LDAP and RPC connectivity. Please check your

Using IP address will still help if it is a name resolution issue.
Try typing ipconfig /all
If the DNS address is not the same as the gateway address then that would also cause this issue.

If I’m not mistaken, won’t this be message only pop up once the user has logged in?

Someone had something similar yesterday at this link . They ended up using NCAT
ChuckShortridge Mar 27, 2014 at 12:25 PM
I would suggest ncat (http://nmap.org/ncat/ Opens a new window)
Using ncat you can do something like:
echo Text to send & echo. | ncat 192.168.1.103 5000

So your message will provide them with a new temporary password? This will mean anyone who decides to try to get on that computer will have the new temp password and will then be prompted to change it after they logon?
From a security standpoint, this would not be the recommended way to accomplish providing the user with a temporary password.
Furthermore; wouldn’t it be easier to have the user with the issue provide you their existing PW when in need of RDP assistance?

I think Gretchen wants to change the win 7 login screen or background just for first boot after password change.

Following on from Andrews post above, there are suggestions in this link which will create a banner at logon but which will then have to be removed after the user has gone through whatever steps you have outlined. If you just need to send and message and then forget (no other input needed) you need to use some sort of single message service like msg or the ncat option

I just tested the Suggestion on the blow link.
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/6030.windows-7-how-to-show-a-custom-text-… Opens a new window
It shows the message before the user can enter a username & password.
And they have to click «OK » to the message before they can.

I tried this (Andrew’s suggestion) and got it to work — but I only need it to display one time… plus it blends in too much with the current login text and I seriously doubt they would see it.
I looked into NCAT and it seems a bit over my head. Anyone have a step by step on it? I even played with the GUI version — Zenmap and got it to scan but don’t see how or where to send a message?

Can password change notification be handled a different way? If I pass by a monitor that has the password notificaton will I be able to log in as that user because your temp password is the same for everyone.

I appreciate everyone’s concern about security — I really do… but it doesn’t answer my question.
For for purposes of this discussion can we just assume that I want to display my cell phone number on a virtual sticky note before login?

here is another reg hack. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2Pfnnnaq-c Opens a new window
You may have to change the login background to make it stand out more.

For any of the reg hack versions this is something I would have to turn «Off» though right? Even if I do it through GP I would have to then remote into the machine again and do gpupdate/force… urrggghhhh
So no way to send a one time popup message? Or any easy instructions for using NCAT? I’ve played with it a bit and so far have not been successful!

Have you not tried…
Msg * /server:COMPUTERNAME YOURMESSAGE
Should work from a domain admin account, if the domain admin also has local admin rights.

For me this shows the prompt above the Ctrl-Alt-Delete before you logon. I use it to throw up messages about internet unreliability etc. to every computer on the domain. Also include the timeout switches so that if no one responds for 30mins it disappears.

Hi,
sorry to open up an old discussion, but I thought it wasn’t worth creating a new one, with exactly the same issue.
Does the msg.exe work also when sending a message to PCs that are currently turned off ?
I tried doing the above mentioned
msg * /server:MYPCNAME Message and I got a pop-up instantly.
Then I tried the same syntax, only with a PC name where I want the message to display, after a user logs on — on the same network — but i got this error:
Error 1722 getting session names
I know that in a server environment, it would be much better to do via the server and group policies, but I could not find a suitable option (displaying the message to just one specific user).

The answer to your question is no. The msg only works when the target computer is switched on and is communicable on the network.
The message pops up instantly. You could put the msg * [your message] code into a login script for the user you’re targeting, so that it is executed when the user logs in.
