Question External HDD unable to access data
synus.meignaer
Commendable
I have a 1TB ADATA HD650 external hard drive, I’ve had it for over a year, and one day I after I got back from a meeting I turned on my computer I noticed that Windows wouldn’t boot, it was stuck on the logo screen. Until I disconnected that drive from my PC it booted, and after that I plugged the drive back in, but it wouldn’t show up on explorer, tried opening task manager and I saw that it was getting detected, but for some reason it shows that it has 0MB formatted, which for me seemed strange considering I hadn’t done anything that could compromise my data in there. Diskpart shows the same under list disk. So I tried to recover my data using Wondershare Recoverit, and it also showed my drive, but when I started scanning it, the active time graph on task manager went to 100% but without any activity from the drive, a red LED was flashing on the drive, and it disconnected itself from the computer, and some time later Windows showed a notification about «USB device not recognised.» And after that it wouldn’t do anything, so I just unplugged it.
What seems strange is that the drive does not make any kind of unusual sounds, it spins up normally, I hear a single faint click, probably the heads moving to some position, but then it doesn’t do anything.
Tried to check it with HD Tune: trying to do a Benchmark test just shows up «Read Error. Test Aborted», and with Error Scanning the drive does the same as in Wondershare Recoverit, where it just goes 100% active time, but no activity, disconnects itself, etc.
I think my data could be intact, based on the fact that it may be a problem with some logic board, but I don’t know if the problem is on the actual hard drive board or the SATA to USB board from the [original] case. What I think though, that may have caused this problem is that most of the time I plugged this drive in an USB 3.0 hub, (it was one of those that didn’t have a DC jack) and sometimes it would have power problems due to the kind of devices I had connected, such as an audio interface, a capture card, another external HDD, etc. So that may have damaged something in the hard drive, but again, I’m not sure if the problem is with the hard drive itself, or the case, so if I take out the hard drive and put it on another case I think I could recover my data.
But if you could let me know if something else could be done to this drive, it would be appreciated.

Do you mean this:
I turned on my computer. It would not boot with the external connected. It did boot when I disconnected the external.
I turned on my computer. It booted until I disconnected the external. After I disconnected the external, it would not boot.

HI
I have a second rig that I use for gaming and other testing etc — no important data at all. It’s running a 3x 80Gb RAID0 array on the ati motherboard controller. I have run a defrag, windows error check, deleted a load of old un-needed files and done hdtune error check and all appears to be fine. Also I don’t get any crashes and it seems to run windows and games at a very good speed. I’ve also just set the BIOS back to optimal defaults (except the RAID part obviously).
The problem is that when I try to run HDTune benchmark I get an error that reads — ‘read error — test aborted’ and I want to know why. Any Ideas?
I’ve tried reinstalling HDTune and I get a similar error from HDTach and the everest HD test just freezes until I click ‘stop’. I want to avoid re-installing windows as its a hassle.

Well, it seems like a dying HDD to me. Do you have your OS installed on a 3-drive RAID 0 array — on a motherboard controller? That means that everything is lost even if one of those drives or the mobo messes up. The risk is at least three times more than with no RAID.
Anyway, I’d suggest backing up anything important (if you have any, you said you don’t but maybe saved games?) and checking the drives with a bit-by-bit testing software and even checking the SMART statuses.

Yes, I do and yes all is lost if I get a failure. I have nothing I don’t mind loosing!Nothing important to backup. Most of the gaming I do single player is on another PC, all I use this one for is LAN games and occasionally I take it away with me when working away from home (it’s SFF) — in which case I transfer saved games onto it and then off later.
I’ve checked the array with HDTune’s error check and with Windows XP error scan, with no failures at all! Is there any other software people can suggest? I cannot get SMART data from the drives as the array is seen as a single drive without SMART. I doubt the drives have a failure, it seems to me to be more of a file system problem or MBR issue — but I don’t what or how to fix it.

Just a quick update — I turned off RAID in the BIOS and booted from CD with UBCD4Win and ran HDTune from there. All three drives will benchmark just fine that way, on their own but as an array they just won’t do it.
Furthermore, I can run individual benchmarks on everest except for the ‘linear read’. Random read etc are fine. Linear read fails immediately so I’m guessing there’s some sort of file system error where the linear read tests want to start at.

I’ve had the same error only on Windows 10 (never on Windows 7), on 4 different computers. Most of the time the error occur on very fast drives (normal HDD usually passes the test fine), but NVMe and Ramdisks 99% fail with that error. The 1% that passes are usually when testing right after reboot, but with 100% chance fail during immediate second run.

Hi guys!
I just bought a 2TB Seagate external HDD(model no: STBV2000200)
After a few excellent results in some benchmarks i got this message «HD Tune Pro I/O Error! Test Aborted» when i tryed the «File benchmark» more precisely the Block size measurement from HD Tune Pro:
Then i tried the Random Acces test from HD Tune and, after running the first three transfer sizes it stopped, giving the same error. So, realising i was using an old version of HD Tune (4.6), i upgraded it to the latest version(5.5) and this random acces test worked fine, but the file benchmark is still giving the same error
as you can see in this picture the Random Acces test now( in version 5.5) skips the 512 bytes transfer size…..
So… i don’t know if Atto disk mark is the same as File benchmark in HD Tune , but because it seems similar to me, i tried it…
and as you see, this software is notifying me that transfer size is less than the disk sector size so…. the test auto adjusts to start from 4KB instead of 512B then it runs without any issues and i think the results are very good considering this is an USB 3.0 not an eSATA drive, so it has a built-in SATA to USB 3.0 adapter that could slow things down…:
Going back to the error message (I/O error) i thought it might be a good idea to test with IOmeter and if this test fails maybe the drive has some problems. This is some interesting information from IOmeter:
this message appears if i try testing with a 512B access specification, but if i test with 4K or more the test works fine
Please tell me if i’m wrong or confirm this: Is the error in HD Tune «File Benchmark» caused because this drive is formatted using 4K sector size and the test wants to start from 512B, not being able to auto adjust like ATTO, and giving a generic error message instead of a more explicit one like IOmeter or even ATTO does when trying to test starting from 512B tranfer sizes?
Also, Why has the Raw Read Error Rate such a big value here?
This is a new HDD, and though the Status column says «OK» my internal drives have very low values for this parameter (one has 2 and an other 7), but strangely, my SSD has a high value as well for this parameter.
Here are some other tests that look good:

The extremely high Raw Read Error Rate and Seek Error Rate suggest badly failing media. Those are both supposed to be zero. Small numbers (dozens) are generally permissible if the HDD has a few years on it. Since the numbers are sky high, and you’re getting I/O errors, and the HDD is new, it is probably a bad unit.
Also note that the formatted file system sector size should have nothing to do with reading the raw HDD. Perhaps the HDD has a sector size larger than 512 bytes.

I know my post is very long, but i think you didn’t understand something; i dont get I/O errors from the OS, i get that error only from HD Tune when i try to run the File Benchmark.
Yes the drive is new, after i bought it, i tested it then found this and didn’t use it for storing any of my data, because i wanted to ask for other oppinions first.

Yes it does have a 4K sector size, as it is reported in the tools i used to test it. And this was my guess for the I/O error i get in HD Tune file benchmark as i said:

This is very strange, considering this is a brand new HDD, i just bought it last week, and didn’ used it at all, i just performed these tests….
I’ll try to RMA it, though in my country it is quite hard… unless the equipment is dead, at least i have nothing to backup since i didn’used it…
L.E.: now i think i have the final clue, from Seagate itself:
as you can see my 45month old samsung passes the same test with no problem, and the 6 day old external seagate fails

UPDATE:
It seems like we didn’t intrepret the parameter values correctly!
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/Seagate_SER_RRER_HEC.html
Quote:
In fact the normalised values of Seagate’s Seek Error Rate, Raw Read Error Rate, and Hardware ECC Recovered attributes are logarithmic, not linear, and the raw values are sector counts or seek counts, not error counts.
But because the SeaTools test failed, i think the unit is defective
What’s a good hard drive benchmark?
The Official StorageReview.com Take
In ascending order, from worst to best:
1. SiSoft? Sandra 200x
Strengths: None
Weaknesses: Inconsistencies between test runs; unrealistic results for its access time and transfer rates; no facilities for application-level testing.
2. ATTO Powertools
Strengths: Measures STR using several different block sizes.
Weaknesses: STR is NOT representative of real-world performance. The program is susceptable to a Windows XP issue involving SCSI that many if not most applications are not.
3. HDTach 2.xx
Strengths: Measures read and write STR. Presents a reasonable measurement of access time.
Weaknesses: STR is NOT representative of real-world performance. The STR measurements are taken from sample sectors staggered across the drive, often rendering results for RAID configurations useless. This is because this method often means a particular sample reading doesn’t cross stripe boundaries, therefore producing results equal or similar to single-drive results.
4. IOMeter
Strengths: Highly-configurable synthetic tests that can reasonably simulate multi-user performance.
Weaknesses: Does not take locality effects into account and thus is totally useless for assessing single-user performance.
5. WinBench? 99
Strengths: Exhaustive, repeatable, and accurate read STR measurement. Reasonably accurate random access time measurement. Disk WinMarks? are one of the few tools that actually attempt to replicate application-level access patterns.
Weaknesses: No provision for testing write STR speeds. STR is NOT representative of real-world performance. Disk WinMarks? were recorded using dated operating systems and applications and «double cache» (weigh the effects of OS-level caching in both the initial record and subsequent playback stages). More information on WB99’s deficiencies may be found here (cache).
6. StorageReview Desktop DriveMark 2002
Strengths: Exhaustive, repeatable, and accurate application-level performance measurements using a contemporary OS and application suite. Avoids the key WB99 Disk WinMark? shortfall of double-caching.
Weanesses: Not publicly available; results published only at SR.
Summary: There is no publicly available benchmark that can accurately simulate single-user performance. As a result, individuals are limited to using accurate low-level benchmarks as a diagnostic rather than a measure of speed. For this purpose, WinBench? 99’s Disk Inspection suite remains best. If a given sample’s WB99-measured access time and STR matches the results published by SR, then it is safe to assume that the drive’s application-level performance also matches those found in the SR review.
For multi-user performance, IOMeter remains a viable choice. Remember, however, that it can not assess single-user performance. Otherwise commendable sites such as xbitlabs.com unfortunately perpetuate this flawed use of IOMeter.
Additional comments by reader skrossklass:
Windows
Probably the best freely available hard drive benchmark is German c’t magazine’s h2benchw, which they use themselves when reviewing hard drives. It measures the interface and physical transfer rates, access time, includes some application patterns and can do data integrity testing. Text and Postscript log (tranfer rate graph, if created is found in the latter). Requires an empty unpartitioned disk (write access) for accurate application benchmark results. Works on device level. Command line tool for Windows NT, 2000, XP, Server 2003, etc. German, English and Dutch interfaces.
A graphical benchmark suite that used to be quite popular in days gone by and is in terms of hard drive performance still useful for measuring the read access time and to create nice STR graphs is ETestingLabs’ WinBench 99 (cache). The drive benchmarks operate on partition level. Test results can be saved to its database, the transfer rate graph can be exported in Windows bitmap (BMP) format. Virtually any 32-bit Windows starting from 95 and NT. English interface.
StorageReview uses a suite of utilites known as the Intel Performance Evaluation and Analysis Kit: Storage Performance Toolbox, (IPEAK SPT) for short, to evaluate typical single-user drive performance. It was an $800 commercial program that has unfortunately been discontinued. For server-related performance measurement, SR uses IOMeter (cache). Note that while IOMeter is capable of measuring performance under multi-user loads, it is not capable of assessing single-user performance.

For some reason, whenever I try to run the file benchmark on my WD Blue 1TB or WD Black 1TB on HDTune Pro, it always immediately returns a screen saying «I/O Error! Test aborted.» Normally I would understand if this was happening if these drives were old, or had any indication that they are dying in some way. However, both drives have been purchased within the last 9 months, and the Blue drive was purchased only four months ago. They are each filled to approximately 70-80% capacity at the moment, with this being the highest capacity the Blue has ever reached, while the Black drive at one point hit 95% before I reshuffled some files. I haven’t noticed any other issues with the drives at all, except that HDTune’s regular benchmark seems to say that the Blue drive is slightly faster than the Black, which clearly shouldn’t be the case. HDTune’s own drive status program shows no SMART issues in any of my drives either. Does anyone know what could be causing this or how I could fix it?
Also, I’m not sure if this is relevant but my motherboard is currently set to run its SATA ports in «RAID Mode» instead of AHCI mode, I’m not sure if that would matter, but I don’t currently have a RAID array, this setting is just from a previous array that I used to have, and now I’m afraid that if I change the setting my drives might not boot anymore.

Never mind, I figured it out. Problem was being caused by my drives being assigned as the A: drive and B: drive (Windows 8 allows this, and my slight OCD has always tormented me at not being able to use them for hard drives previous to this, so naturally I jumped on the opportunity to assign those letters). Anyway I reassigned to J: and K: drives just for the purpose of testing and all is now well!
