An update error occurred:
All files had finally downloaded, it started to do the next step, then I got this message:
PatchClientDLL::CheckDatFiles Failed. [Unable to decrypt and de-serialize the data downloaded from the server.]
After that it is stuck in the retry loop.
How to fix this?
Further info: Win10 computers (I was updating on 2 computers and both got the same error)

Ayi, same issue here, can not proceed that. PatchClientDLL::CheckDatFiles Failed. Yesterday played normal.
I ended up patching lotro on my laptop successfully, then copied the files across following the instructions in https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthr. 97#post7650397
If that isn’t possible, try renaming UserPreferences.ini — that might get the loader working again, but will probably need to re-download the patch files.
Had real problems getting patch to load on hubby’s PC. In the end I checked the system for any LOTRO running in the background, and found one to end process on. Worked fine after that.
Sometimes, no matter how hard you look, there is no best light.
I have a similar error message on macOS Mojave. I have LotRO through Steam. I tried deleting and re-installing the client but I got the error again. I tried renaming UserPreferences.ini but that also didn’t help, I got the error message again.
Message for me is: ../../../../src/engine/client/patcherui/patchclientdll.cpp, 442 Failed. [Unable to decrypt and de-serialize the data downloaded from the server.]

I have the same error , put a ticket in but no reply yet , dare say there wont be one » several business days» is the reply timeframe. ….
so. how to get launcher working again to re-download the patch. or is there a link where we can download the patch file and run from pc ?
This is what I posted in another thread:
When you get the «unable to decrypt. » error a file got corrupted during the download. At the very least, you have to re-download the patch, but the problem is in identifying WHAT file actually got corrupted. Lotro patches are basically «inserted» into the big DAT files you see in the root of the game folder. these are the files that measure up to 4 GB in size or more. Examine the date and time closely of those files. and delete the LAST timed file, restart the client and see if that is what cause the issue. With a little luck, only the LAST file got corrupted, maybe why the patch stopped, etc. It will have to re-download the entire file now, but at least it won’t be the entire game.
Unfortunately, the last time I had this error (and the only time actually, about 8 months ago) I ended up doing a complete fresh re-install of the game. For me, having 1 Gbps fiber internet, that wasn’t a big deal. if you have slower internet that might get very frustrating downloading the big files.
I have since then actually kept a backup of Lotro on another drive — just the game folder of 30-ish GB — so that in case I do run into issues I would just copy that back to my folder, launch the client, and it would just need to download the latest patches. As my patch is now finished, I have taken a full backup of the game (27.70 GB in my case) and set it aside. Even though I have Gigabit internet, copying from a hard drive to my SSD is significantly faster.
Once your game works, I would recommend doing the same. I know 30 GB is a lot, but most external drives will hold that 50 times over these days.
You SHOULD be able to fix it by deleting the LAST *.dat file based on the modified time of the .dat files in your Lotro directory. You would only need to download THAT file again, which might be 4 GB or so. but it surely beats downloading the whole 30 GB.

PatchClientDLL::CheckDatFiles Failed
Hi, for the past two days, presumably since the latest patch, I cannot log in to the game any more. The launcher starts, then gives this error message:
PatchClientDLL::CheckDatFiles Failed. [Unable to decrypt and deserialize the data downloaded from the server.]
What should I do? I have an exemption for LotRO in my virus scanner already; anyway, that hasn’t been a problem for a long time.

I use Windows10.
I have the exact same thing!
(I use Windows 7 Ultimate)
I do not have an english Windows Operation System so things might be called different.
Close the Lotro Launcher and make sure it isn’t just minimized to task bar!
1. Right click on the shortcut to the LotroLauncher on your Desktop
2. choose the option below OPEN in the context menu (should be something like Open file path)
3. sort the content in the folder that should have opened by date or search the name of the file client_highres_aux_2.datx by name (should be the latest or one of the latest files, about 34 MB)
4. right click on that file and choose Delete from the context menu or left click it once and press DEL-Key on your keyboard to move it to the waste bin
5. Double click on shortcut to relaunch the game
If you were impacted by an issue on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning that is causing the following error message when trying to launch the game client:
PatchClientDLL::CheckDatFiles Failed. [Unable to decrypt and deserialize the data downloaded from the server.]
There are two things you can do:
1. A full Repair using the Options in the game launcher. This will be a large download.
2. You can go into your game’s install directory and delete only the following: client_highres_aux_2.datx
So, close the launcher and remove from task bar if applicable, go into directory, delete the .datx, re-launch the launcher. It’ll redownload the .datx in a smaller update and you should be fixed.
Further help can be found at help.standingstonegames.com.
and followed the advice therein to use the repair function, which took forever, but I’m now able to log in again. Hopefully, that will keep.

Just for feedback: Tried this today, because I got the same error message, but unfortunately that didn’t fix it.
EDIT: I then tried to use the repair function from the launcher options. It said it would download around 24 GB, I confirmed and the launcher closed. Nothing else happened. Tried it again, same outcome. I’m at a loss.

I’m also having this exact issue and have tried both options listed above.
same problems
I also have the same problems even after trying the different solutions.
The next try will be a complete uninstallation and reinstallation.
I think u gonna get the same result. Already tried. not working. frust. Wanna play this game guys. My country in Movement Control Order (MCO), so i really wanna play this game badly . ( T o T )
Help me to kill this boredom . anyone!
Same issues
Same issues here. Just started on Friday with the last update. The fixes Cord suggested previously don’t work.
I had this issue last year, and gave up and uninstalled the game. A few weeks ago I tried a fresh install. Same issue. Error message, launcher tries to re-download a bunch of files, error message again.
At some point after the second fail, I got a random pop-up asking me if I wanted hi-res textures, and I clicked no, sort of by accident.
After that, it installed quickly and successfully.
I’m honestly not sure if I’m playing with hi-res textures or not now, but I have them chosen in settings, and it seems fine. Cord’s post above does suggest it is an issue with the hi-res dat files.

I have unchecked hi-res, I have swapped between the 32 and 64 clients, I have deleted the dat files, I ran the repair tool, and I am currently doing this all for the fourth time. I just want to play my game
EDIT: Final swap to 32 bit Client, hi-res game data is checked, FOURTH repair run on the launcher, and I finally got past the 60% failure. Now the launcher is applying 3295 forward iterations. FINGERS CROSSED!

Hey, having the same problem here while trying to reactivate my old installation. Which is unfortunate, because I also got my wife to play for the Corona Times, but now it doesn’t work for us.
Did it work for you finally, and what exactly did you do?
How old is your installation of LOTRO software? If it is too old, you might need to completely reinstall everything.
Alright for all of you having this issue, I managed to fix it. The issue is because of the high res, and its not just the high res.2 file that needs to go, delete ALL high res files, then relaunch the client. It has to download the high res from base, to .1, to .2, if you try to just do .2, it will constantly try to finalize the download. So delete all 3 (or if for some case you have more, then delete all high res) they are located all in a row together, and it should correct the error and allow you to play.
FURTHER INSTRUCTION:
1.) Right click your LOTRO shortcut file and OPEN FILE LOCATION
2.) Click to arrange the files by DATE
3.) Locate these files;
client_highres.dat,
client_highres_aux_1.datx,
client_highres_aux_2.datx
4.) DELETE THESE FILES TO TRASH, THEN EMPTY TRASH FOLDER
5.) Run the client and it should go through all the high res files and redownload them IN ORDER, which should then complete and let you play!!
Like my feedback and support? Let me know! I am new to the game but very good with technical issues and finding solutions. Thank you!

An update Error occured
I have the same problem and so it isn’t just you
I have the same problem, the initial patch download seemed a bit slower than usual so I left it running overnight. Now I have this «error», tried restarting the Launcher but it had no effect, problem is still there. The «retry» counts down from 60 to 1 and then just starts over. I considered trying a «Repair» but that says it needs to delete 24.29 GB of data from my disk and download all new .dat files which would mean several hours of downloading so no playing LotRO today, which would mean yet another day of gameplay missed because of this patch!
So, any solution that doesn’t require deleting 25 GB of data? Anyone at SSG even care that something has gone wrong for some players?
Same Problem.. Repair did not work.. reinstall did not work.. Patches in the last months worked well.. but U23 don´t like me ..

Which is under the «Miscellaneous» section of the Update 23 Release Notes.
Anyway, I’ve now submitted a report directly to SSG Customer Support because they clearly don’t bother with these forums!
Same here. I posted in the Windows Tech Support Forums also.
Guess I won’t be trying either a Repair or reinstall then! This is the first time I’ve had such a problem with patches, so I can’t help but wonder if it has anything to do with:
Which is under the «Miscellaneous» section of the Update 23 Release Notes.
Akamai was never used for regular patches/updates. It was just used for the initial install of the game client files and repair functionality.
Akamai was never used for regular patches/updates. It was just used for the initial install of the game client files and repair functionality.
OK, well thanks for that I guess. Doesn’t actually do much of anything to actually help solve the problem.
Anywho, 5+ hours later and still zero response to my Support Ticket and zero response from anyone at SSG here in this thread either! So another day of not being able to play LotRO due to something getting screwed up with the patch and SSG not bothering to look at what’s happening in their own forums, let alone trying to fix the mess this is causing!
Nor did suggesting that the removal of Akamai was likely to blame. I’m not sure why you’d take issue only with the correction to that suggestion while still somehow considering the suggestion (erroneous as it was) worthwhile/helpful.
If someone starts barking up the wrong tree, it’s generally a good idea for that person to be told that it’s the wrong tree so that emphasis can then be put on finding the right tree.

OK, let me try to explain in simple terms so that you understand. People here have a problem with the patch having screwed something up and now we cannot play the game and SSG appear to be doing nothing to help anyone. Yes, I did wonder if the removal of Akamai might be connected somehow, hence why I wrote «I can’t help but wonder if ..» but it was more of a vague thought, a maybe, but nothing overly major. You posted to correct me on that, I thanked you for that piece of information and also noted that it did nothing to help resolve this particular issue. As far as I was concerned that was the end of that! I was NOT taking issue with anything you wrote, but apparently you’ve chosen to make some sort of issue out of it, so I will apologize if you were offended or upset in some way, but please don’t go trying to make an issue out of something that is not an issue! Once again, thank you for explaining that Akamai is not connected to this problem.
So, 11+ hours since I submitted a Support Request Ticket, still zero response to it and still zero response from anyone at SSG to this thread either!

Please don’t take your frustrations out on someone merely pointing out a fact about something you wondered aloud about in a public forum.
Good luck finding a solution.

OK, I apologized for any offense but apparently that just wasn’t enough, you’re still trying to make an issue out of something that I clearly stated was not an issue for me. You obviously have nothing to add to this discussion that will help anyone resolve the problem so please just stop.

Still no response to my Support Request Ticket which is now 25+ hours waiting, SSG seems very quiet on this problem.

For those running into this issue, let me know if right clicking on the LotroLauncher.exe and running it as an Administrator helps.
Another thing to try is to copy the files from the LOTRO game client installation path Backup folder into the main folder and overwriting what’s there. Then try updating again.
For the sake of the thread. . . you have PM.
UPDATE: I chose to repair the game, downloaded it all over again and it worked. So that’s one way to solve the problem I guess.
But, I really suggest taking a look at this post: https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthr. 90#post7874790 ,as Altair6 has already suggested (btw, nice name!)
because if it works, you won’t have to re-download the whole game and save quite some time.
I hope this post helped you

Tried both of those and neither worked. Nor did deleting the client_highres.dat and client_highres_aux_1.datx files. Deleting the entire contents of the downloading folder to ensure a clean, fresh download of files did not work either. Selecting the Repair option in the LotRO Launcher did not work either! I submitted a Support Request for this over 30 hours ago and I still have not received a response!
Any other possible solutions? Or should I just go ahead and completely uninstall the game?
EDIT: Someone posted in the other thread about this error Can we get a response from SSG re: PatchClientDLL: CheckDatFiles Failed that «it may be possible that pausing during the original update may have somehow corrupted both my client_highres.dat and client_highres_aux_1.datx». Now, last night is when I tried deleting both client_highres.dat and client_highres_aux_1.datx, as well as running the lotrolauncher as Administrator to ensure that wasn’t a problem. Once the launcher started downloading I left it running overnight while I got some sleep. When I got up today I found that Microsoft had decided last night was the ideal time to update Windows 10 and had subsequently restarted my system so it was just sitting at the Welcome screen waiting for me to log on. *sigh* Once Windows had finished loading there was another update from Microsoft so I had to let that complete and then restart again. After that I ensured everything else was fully updated to try and ensure there were no more interruptions and once again ran the lotrolauncher, once it loaded the download was sitting at 50% so I just let it resume but when it finished the same problem was back. So I guess I have to try deleting both client_highres.dat and client_highres_aux_1.datx once again and hope the launcher is allowed to complete the download without further interruptions from any other software.

- The log file «<userid>/Library/Logs/LotroLauncher.log» will typically display messages such as:
