Hammer error gameinfo txt is missing
Half-Life Deathmatch: Source
Do you have the FGD file?
Here is the rest of the info:
*This is for setting up Hammer world editor (2013_MP) for Hldms.
Valve did not ship the FGD file with the new SDK, add FGD to
C:Program FilesSteamsteamappscommonhalf-life 1 source deathmatchbin (put in bin folder).
Hldms also needs the gameinfo.txt file, located at C:Program FilesSteamsteamappsCOMMONhalf-life 1 source deathamtchhl1mp make a copy
and paste at C:Program FilesSteamsteamappsCOMMONhalf-life 1 source deathamtchhl2 (paste in hl2 folder)
The new SDK does not have a launcher so make desktop shortcuts for Hammer.exe,studiomdl.exe,hlfaceposer.exe,hlmv.exe these
can be found at C:Program FilesSteamsteamappscommonhalf-life 1 source deathmatchbin
If you have mapped before may be a good idea to get your mapsrc files moved over from the old Hammer, find them at «C:Program FilesSteamsteamappsYOUR_ACCT_NUMBERsourcesdk_contenthl2mpmapsrc» and move to
C:Program FilesSteamsteamappscommonhalf-life 1 source deathmatchhl1mp delete your old shortcut to mapsrc and make a
new one for the folder you just moved.
Now open up hammer with the hammer.exe icon.
Select the «restore down icon» (To make hammer smaller so you can read this and see hammer).
Select (upper left on hammer) tools then options.
Click on «Edit» select «add» and enter Half-life Deathmatch click ok then close.
From the drop down (arrow down) (under configuration) select Half-life Deathmatch.
Now under Game date files we need to load our FGD file so click on add and the «bin» folder should load up
select hl1mp.fgd click on it then select open (it will load the info).
Texture format and Map type leave as they are.
Under default pointentity class select info_player_deathmatch.
Under default Solidentity class select Func_detail.
Default texture scale and Default lightmap scale leave alone
Cordon texture browse for tools/toolsskybox and set that as the texture.
Game executable Directory browse to C:Program FilesSteamsteamappscommonhalf-life 1 source deathmatch (click on the + sign to
keep expanding,) when you get to «half-life 1 source deathmatch» click on the text for «half-life 1 source deathmatch» then click ok.
we only need to tell hammer «where» the hl2.exe is,you wont see it in the folder with the «browse for folder window».
Game directory click down (using the + sign to C:Program FilesSteamsteamappscommonhalf-life 1 source deathmatchhl1mp
Once again when you see «hl1mp» dont expand click on the text «hl1mp».
For the Hammer .VMF Directory (your mapsrc folder) click down to C:Program FilesSteamsteamappscommonhalf-life 1 source deathmatchhl1mp
expand hl1mp this time you will see the folder named mapsrc click on the text «mapsrc» then ok.* note if this is a fresh install or you did not move your old mapsrc folder you need to make one here.
Now click on «build programs» tab (upper right on configure Hammer)
On top line selct «half-life deathmatch» with the down arrow.
Under the next one «Game executable» click on the folders(you may need to go up to arrow to get to C: program files as it starts in «bin» double click on the folder’s to move along) to get to C:Program FilesSteamsteamappscommonhalf-life 1 source deathmatchhl2.exe (click on hl2.exe)then open tab.
BSP executable at C:Program FilesSteamsteamappscommonhalf-life 1 source deathmatchbin (VBSP.EXE)
click on it then open tab. same for vvis executable and vrad executable.
Last one «place compiled maps in this directory» at C:Program FilesSteamsteamappscommonhalf-life 1 source deathmatchhl1mpcustomANY_NAME_YOU_WANTmaps click on the text for maps. (there is a map folder at hl1mp keep that for valve core maps, custom new ones at the new folder location, if you dont have a customANY_NAME_YOU_WANTmaps folder you need to create them first. somthing like this customreddogmaps * note reddog name does not matter you can use any name, hammer searches with a «*» for wild card so any name will work
You are done., click apply then ok and restart Hammer. another note when you first compile a map,
make sure before you compile that the box is checked «dont run the game after compiling» it will
crash if you dont have it checked.
we want to all custom stuff in the «custom» folder to keep valve’s hands off of it, custom/reddog/maps
materials
models
sounds
cfg
(everybody above gets a folder)
Think of the «custom» folder as the new hl1mp folder, the reason is, if we leave our stuff in hl1mp, and they do a update, it will affect
our stuff to as well, the less they can get ahold of the better.

Missing GameInfo.txt

This occurs when the Current Game is incorrectly configured.
This can happen when:
- The Game Directory is set incorrectly so the tools cannot find the gameinfo.txt file.
- A gameinfo.txt file for the game is missing or incorrect.
- Installing/Restoring HL2 games from a backup that was created via the «Backup Games. » menu, but not having actually played the games after the install (HL2, EP1, etc).
How to fix this problem:
- First and foremost run the game (HL2, EP1, etc) at least once before running the SDK tools like Hammer. Running the games for the first time will create the gameinfo.txt and related files that are used by the SDK tools.
- If this is a custom MOD, make sure the Game Directory is set correctly, and that a valid gameinfo.txt is present.
- Try running the game you’re editing for once from the Play Games window.
- Try to Reset the Source SDK Game Configuration.
- If that does not work, Reinstall the Source SDK installation.
- If none of the previously stated work, check and see if you have recently changed your drive’s letter to something different.
- To fix the config go to X:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonCounter-Strike Global Offensivebin, then open «GameConfig»
- Open «GameConfig» and change all of the letters of the old drives to the current letter.

Garry’s Mod
So im getting this error when i start my game but when i check my folder the file is there.
Solution that worked for me: whitelist the game on your antivirus.
yes i tried that at first but that didnt fix the issue. i managed to fix it and it was my antivirus preventing my game from opening the file. The file was present in the folder. Whitelisted the game and it started.

lol so far a very effective anti-virus/malware. Sometimes alittle too effective.
i got this same issue and it literally just started now how do i fix this i use AVG anti virus
I was about to respond to this thread because I had the same problem, but by fiddling about I just solved it!
If you’re still getting «Can’t find E:Program FilesSteamsteamappscommonGarrysModgarrysmodgameinfo.txt» then you must ask yourself, if it’s actually in «Program Files» or «Program Files (x86)» (or some other x## or drive etc). That’s what stumped me for so long!
If Garry’s Mod is in your «Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon» folder and your Hammer is looking for gameinfo.txt in «Program FilesSteamsteamappscommon» then what you should do is open GameConfig.txt in the same bin folder as Hammer and correct all those addresses with the proper Program Files address.
Silly me for not figuring it out sooner. Iw as simply not reading the error message properly.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
this guide should help you with this error : gameinfo.txt dosen’t exist

go into your «Counter-Strike Global Offensivebin» folder and open up gameconfig.txt (not gameinfo.txt in the «Counter-Strike Global Offensivecsgo» folder like the error suggests)
(ignore the underline, DO NOT add the underline into the text file)
In the text file It said this:
«GameDir» «D:GamesSteamsteamappscommonCounter-Strike Global Offensivecsgo»
«Hammer»
changed it to this:
«GameDir» «D:GamesSteamsteamappscommonCounter-Strike Global Offensivecsgo»
«Hammer» «D:SteamSteamAppscommonCounter-Strike Global Offensivebinhammer.exe»
and it should load up without any errors. comment down below if you are having any problems with this.
i do csgo gamplay and unboxings, check them out here !

Hammer error gameinfo txt is missing
Ok, so I was playing around with sfm and added some mods to it. Later I removed those mods and deleted them and then whenever I try starting up sfm, it just keeps telling me «gameinfo.txt is missing».
I have tried verifying the game cache and re-installing but none of that works.
Can someone please help me, it would be very appreciated.
Thanks!
your gameinfo.txt file for SFM is located in your usermod folder. If you added mods tere may have been gameinfo.txt files that you added with them (bad mistake).
Look and see if there is a gameinfo.txt file in your usermod folder.
1) If there is, open it and see if it reads the following. (this is the vanillia setting for the file)
2) If it doesn’t say the following, replace it with the following,
3) If it doesn’t exist, copy and paste the following into a text document and save it to usermod,
4) If it does exist and does say the following, you’ll have to validate your local cache files to fix it.

I’m trying to launch Hammer from my Team Fortress 2bin folder, but both hammer.bin and hammer.exe fail to launch because «commonTeam Fortress 2tfgameinfo.txt is missing». However, the file is there, and it always has been. This is what it looks like. Is there anything that looks wrong there?
I’ve tried validating TF2 as well as Source SDK numerous times, I’ve set the right path for the game configuration, and I’ve tried to launch Hammer via the SDK launcher — but when I do that, nothing happens. Except one time when it managed to launch Hammer but then it crashed and went back to not launching.
I have no clue any more, guys.

Try just redownloading and deleting the original gameinfo.txt thats what I had to do
-
#3
I’ve tried redownloading it from some other site, and I also tried deleting it and having Steam replace it through validation. Neither of those things worked.
-
#4
Ok, update: I reinstalled TF2 and now I can launch Hammer, but only from the SDK launcher. The bin folder still doesn’t work.
But when I launch it, I get this error:

And then it shuts down/crashes.
Edit: Nevermind, launching from sourcesdk/bin works now. I’m still as confused as ever but at least it seems to work now.

I had this problem. Running hammer as an administrator got it to work. That may be something to keep in mind.

Ok so I have an update: Apparently all of the entity icons and stuff are gone, because they’re all red error models. I decided to reinstall Booj’s FGD pack thing, but I get this error when I try that:

Which is, of course, correct — because I haven’t run Hammer from Team Fortress 2bin, since it doesn’t work, as explained. So I guess I’m back to square one: I need to be able to run Hammer from bin, and for that I need it to be able to locate gameinfo.txt. Does anyone have any clue about how I can do that?
Oh, and FiLi: Thanks for the suggestion, but that doesn’t work.

Have you tried deleting the whole bin and letting steam reacquire it?
-
#8
Wow, no, I hadn’t actually thought of that — and it worked!
Thank you! <3

How does team «reacquire it?» because I am getting an error starting tf2 now.

After you delete it (or not delete it), verify your game cache (google it if you don’t know how to verify your game cache).

Once you’ve deleted the bin, go to steam and right click Team Fortress Two. Find «validate integrity of game cache» somewhere and it will locate the missing bin folder and replace it with a stock one.

Can someone help me out, whenever i try to open Hammer from the tf/bin folder it comes up with the same error message stated at the top of this discussion. I have tried verifying my game cache, deleting it and then verifying, running hammer as an administrator, deleting the bin folder and verifying, resetting the game configuration in the source sdk, even completely reinstalling tf2. nothing is working. and i want to be able to use Hammer through the bin folder, not through the source sdk. it may be worth mentioning that i have moved my steam installation to a separate hard drive recently and verified each game after doing so. Please help.
-
#15
I’m not certain, but I want to say you have to run TF2 through Steam at least once to have it generate a gameinfo.txt
-
#16
done that, didnt work. keeps coming up with the same error at the top of the thread
Naylte ven, naylte yen.
-
#17
You may have to resort to only launching it through the BAT file; I have the same issue with HLMV.
-
#18
I’ve tried launching it through the BAT file. comes up with a window for less than a split second and disappears. Think its having the same problem as the EXE.
-
#19
I may be wrong, but isn’t this thread 3 years old?
-

Yes it is, but nothing else is working

Due to connection problems, I istalled Portal 2 and the Hammer Editor by moving my Steam folder from my old computer to my new one. When I tried to launch Hammer, I got the following error:
«Setup file ‘Gaminfo.txt’ doesn’t exist in subdirectory ‘c:programfilessteamsteamappscommonportal 2portal2’. Check your -game parameter or VCONFIG setting.»
I used the search function on this forum and I also checked Google but I couldn’t find any fitting answer. I was told that I maybe should reinstall Portal 2 but as I said that this is impossible at the moment. Is there another way to get Hammer working correctly?
Of course the data does exist in the right directory.
Then I have another question in case my Hammer Editor can be fixed or something; it’s about the pits outside the testchambers. How do I create these foggy areas? You know, very deadly, extremly deadly… *Cough* Is there an entity or a brush or something like that? I’d try several things, but it never worked. It would be nice, if you could help me.
This problem was solved by copying my Steam folder into another directory. Thanks to everybody who tried to help me here! ^^

Soo much variables that can gone wrong:
1) Did you copy the whole steam folder?
If so: did you copy it from a 32-bits to a 64 bits computer?
64-bits computer install steam in c:/program files(x86)/steam/steamapps
c:programfiles seems strange to me too.
Where is your gameinfo.txt? is it in the steam/steammapps/common/portal 2/portal2?
Does your gameinfo.txt look like this?
- Code: Select all
"GameInfo"
{
game "PORTAL 2"
title "PORTAL 2"
GameData "portal2.fgd"
gamelogo 1SupportsDX8 0
SupportsXbox360 1FileSystem
{
SteamAppId 620 // This will mount all the GCFs we need (240=CS:S, 220=HL2).

// someplace like c:program filesvalvesteamsteamappshalf-life 2.
//SearchPaths
{
Game |gameinfo_path|.
}
}
}
Just my few first thoughts, let us know if you tried some of this and/or if you have other information
The foggy area’s are created with a fog_controller; there are some pre-sets in global_ents.vmt, try and see which one fits the best?

Yes, it does. Maybe there is something different. I am going to test it later by pasting your text in the file. (Of course, I made a backup)

EDIT:
About the path: You are right. It’s not «c:programfiles […]», it is «c:program files […]»
Sorry about that.

You confirmed you switched from 32-bit to 64-bit, but you didn’t mention where you moved the steam folder to. Make sure everything that steam uses (including the sdk files) is in /Program Files (x86)/ and not /Program Files/.
If that fails, I would recommend backing up just the things you know you need (VMF’s, prefabs, etc), and then completely reinstalling. Then put the files back in their corresponding folders once you know hammer is working right.

I installed Steam normally by downloading it. Then, I replaced the folder. That means, Steam is already in /Program Files (x86)/.

I see. Is there anything else I can do or will I have to reinstall Portal 2?
EDIT:
Big, big edit. The thing about the program files gave me an idea. Make more- err, copying my whole Steam-folder into the normal program files. After doing that, I could launch Hammer normally.
Thanks for all the help, everybody.

Hi
watch my Tutorial 2013 of how to fix hammer errors like
— gameinfo.txt missing
— visual elements missing
— fps lagg
can be found here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJ2c674jrrc
Helped alot of people out allready:)
The errors are getting caused by the new steam update. sinds the new steam update got released, the games installation paths got changed, and Valve haven’t changed that in source sdk yet, so if you get the errors it simply means that the path you try to run Hammer from doesn’t exist.
Follow the simple steps in my tutorial of how to fix this, and you’re hammer will work perfectly =)
