Error device failed to enter restore mode
Widnows 8.1

Device failing to enter recovery mode #317
I have the problem that as soon more then one phone is connected the machine idevicerestore fails with an error :»ERROR: Failed to place device in recovery mode» and keeps the phone stuck.
Plattform: windows
Source: it’s reproduceable with the current pushed source code
Build: with msys64
Systems: tested on different windows10 machines, different iTunes versions, different phones, different cables — no change noticable
Call: idevicerestore -C -l -e -y -d
Behaviour:
As long only one phone is connected the whole process runs without any problem through.
As soon a second phone is conneced the call fails with the error and phone is stuck.
Do you have any idea what could trigger that problem?
I saw there was a change in that code area on 11 Oct 2019 commit
[https://github.com/libimobiledevice/idevicerestore/commit/767fcceaeb456f5e281a6bd1b3f51713e4989293] — but no clue if that could be related to that behaviour.

Device fails to enter restore mode, goes back to recovery mode instead #479
I’m trying to restore my iphone 7 using Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS
This is the log when running
idevicerestore —latest
But the device does boot in recovery mode,
I tried running it as root and starting
but saw this

Can you try to build libusb, libplist, libimobiledevice-glue, libusbmuxd, usbmuxd, libimobiledebice, libirecovery and idevicerestore from source and try again

however your issue is fixed by mor recent version
Oops didn’t notice that
I’m now using libusb 1.0.26
Still the same now the command was

Now that you ran with -d we can see that the restore mode problem actually seems to be something else: the device doesn’t even reach restore mode but goes back to recovery mode. Does the device show the Apple logo with an empty progress bar? How long is the delay between
Its almost instant, I see an apple logo, a very fast loading spinner and bam Back in recovery mode, and the error
Ok now we know it’s not a problem with usbmuxd at least. It also doesn’t show up in usbmuxd log output.
However since it has a spinner showing it is definitely past recovery mode, so the component signing/stitching seems ok. Unfortunately this is really hard to figure out, since we don’t know what it is the device isn’t happy about.
Same issue as #415 there was a patch which increased the time idevicerestore waits for the device to enter restore mode, but I can’t find it
Oh right, I remember. I don’t recall a patch though. idevicerestore waits 120 seconds for the device to enter restore mode, but the device re-enters recovery mode so this won’t have any effect changing that. I updated the title of this ticket reflecting the actual problem.
Maybe we can find out what’s wrong with a serial cable to see some log output from the device, but I assume you don’t have something like that at hand.
Also can you try a restore on macOS or Windows via iTunes? If that also fails the device is to blame for some weird reason.
Yeah it fails on iTunes with 4013, guess its on the device then 🙁
Uhhh that’s one of those «unknown errors» which no obvious solution, but it might be either the device or the usb cable. Could also be the lightning port.
Seems like there’s nothing else we can do from the software side unfortunately 😕
Can idevicerestore produce more debug data (does it have a —enable-debug) option with configur
No it’s already printing all it can with -d. Only difference is if you build libimobiledevice with —enable-debug it will print libimobiledevice communication debugging too, but at the point of failure this is all in recovery mode so that won’t help.
Can you try from DFU
encountered this same exact issue.
While compiling from source and installing the dependencies, i installed usbmuxd 1.1.1 which was the latest from my package manager.
even though I did compile usbmuxd , which is currently at version 1.1.2 from source, it was being shadowed by the older version 1.1.1
so the fix for me was ensuring usbmuxd was verion 1.1.2
Glad you’re issue is fixed
@nikias as a package maintainer, can every libimobiledevice tool be built statically
Would you mind a pr which made the version flag show what commit each tool was linked against

@taanders
Thank you for the hint.
i made a fork and implemented a #define to switch between old WAIT_FOR (__usleep) method and new mutex method:
devhem@419a60a
With the current state + enabled WAIT_FOR it’s working again as expected.
@nikias
It would be interresting if that problem (more then one connected device leads to the problem) only appears on windows or also on linux with the new mutex-method.
Hi @taanders, I am trying to implement your hint with WAIT_FOR, but since I don’t code in C, I need some more of your help. When compiling the project code on MacOS Big Sur, I first get a warning about implicit WAIT_FOR, and then the error:
/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/usr/bin/make all-recursive

Please make sure that usbmuxd is running
Started usbmuxd as
sudo usbmuxd -f -U root
[12:34:40.240][3] usbmuxd v1.1.2 starting up
[12:34:40.242][3] Using libusb 1.0.26

Unfortunately this is really hard to figure out, since we don’t know what it is the device isn’t happy about…
Same issue as #415 there was a patch which increased the time idevicerestore waits for the device to enter restore mode, but I can’t find it
Oh right, I remember. I don’t recall a patch though. idevicerestore waits 120 seconds for the device to enter restore mode, but the device re-enters recovery mode so this won’t have any effect changing that. I updated the title of this ticket reflecting the actual problem.
Maybe we can find out what’s wrong with a serial cable to see some log output from the device, but I assume you don’t have something like that at hand…
Also can you try a restore on macOS or Windows via iTunes? If that also fails the device is to blame for some weird reason…
Yeah it fails on iTunes with 4013, guess its on the device then
Uhhh that’s one of those «unknown errors» which no obvious solution, but it might be either the device or the usb cable. Could also be the lightning port.
Seems like there’s nothing else we can do from the software side unfortunately 😕
Can idevicerestore produce more debug data (does it have a —enable-debug) option with configur
No it’s already printing all it can with -d. Only difference is if you build libimobiledevice with —enable-debug it will print libimobiledevice communication debugging too, but at the point of failure this is all in recovery mode so that won’t help.
encountered this same exact issue.
While compiling from source and installing the dependencies, i installed usbmuxd 1.1.1 which was the latest from my package manager.
even though I did compile usbmuxd, which is currently at version 1.1.2 from source, it was being shadowed by the older version 1.1.1
so the fix for me was ensuring usbmuxd was verion 1.1.2
Glad you’re issue is fixed
@nikias as a package maintainer, can every libimobiledevice tool be built statically
Would you mind a pr which made the version flag show what commit each tool was linked against

Failed to restore device in recovery mode, libusbrestore error:2001
Since it’s a newer iOS release I’m sure many won’t know if this is common or not. So the Mrs. Updated her iPhone to the latest IOS recently. No drops water damage etc. We owned it since it came out (bought brand new in 2017/2018?) Never needed serviced etc.
Model: iPhone 10,6 Previous iOS before she updated was 14.6 i think?
She had it on the bed in front of me , charged her phone to about 80% before she went to update her iOS. Everything on the phone worked completely fine beforehand. ->Then She updated her phone over wifi to iOS 15.1. Update was successful then after the restart the touch feedback was sluggish. Laggy and from time to time touch wasn’t responsive for a few seconds. The apps lagged bad! Also it notified that the FaceID was disabled.
So I told her to restart it. Restarted it & it went into the Infinite Boot logo loop.
Hard restart Didn’t work or fix it. Itunes pc update didn’t work. I tunes restore didn’t work.
Took to apple store they looked at it quickly at a table in the middle of the store and didn’t do anything but say «Oh our iOS doesn’t have bugs and it could never cause issues» they popped sim out and girl told me well I can’t see if the water indicator is white or red. She hooked it up to there cable and Mac ran a diag. Everything was fine but she tried doing a restore and it 4013 errored. And shuffled us along quickly. Saying 4013 is always a hardware issue.
Took it home DFU mode tried itunes restore again. 4013 error.
3utools tried ios15.1 flash & it stopped at 19%.

@all.,
—Update 2021/01/05
Many of the iDevice with iOS 15 version that may getting stuck in endless loop and while trying to restore via iTunes that’s will giving error as below
- Could not be updated, An unknown error occurred (1110)
- Other unprofessional tools with 19% or 20% or 24% or 37% error
The problem is because the device does not have enought space to capture the file system during updating etc. and if you continue update step, the device will get stuck in the Apple logo and you may lost all the data at the end, For now, Apple support center may help you replacement the device for free, But you will lost all the data if haven’t backups. In case of this, MFC TEAM did 2 months research & testing in this market and we charged $235 for per Phone while we doing. Now the solution published as a free gift for all MFC users. We believe this is the world’s first software solution to fix iTunes 1110 error.
- Now if you have lisence for mfc software or valid memberships of mfc products that you can completed do this job free through MFC Software
Function Features:
- 100% data saved, without any loss
- No hardware work required
- Approximately 30 minutes per phone
Support Models:
- Any iPhone or iPad (Software V3.9 updated to support up to iPhone 13)
How to?
- Install the latest MFC Software to computer
- Open MFC Software and go to imfc, and do Login (The username and password as same as that you activated on mfcbox.com)
- Connect the device by USB lightning data cable (We also tested via USB-C) , i.e. iPhone 12
- Once device connected to software, double click on the connected list(Usually shown in Green color)[You can repair 5 devices at the same time,The premise is that your computer has enough space and good enough performance]
- Open Flash tab, choose «Repair» function start repair (Here you need to select the latest firmware or new bata firmware, If you don’t know how to choose or download the firmware, click «Download Latest» The software will automatically download the firmware to the default installation directory, C:/MFC/iDeviceTools , Then holding «shift» key manually select) [Note that the firmware should only be placed in the english folder]
- The software will automatically fix the 1110 error during the process, it will take a little time,So please wait patiently (Usually no red error in the logs means successed)
Reference picture
- During the repair process, the software may also have a pop-up dialog telling you to restart the device manually (the phone will enter recovery mode again after reboot)
Reference picture - After the Phone reboot complete click «OK» The software will automatically execute the next step, (Please wait patiently), Due any unknown case here you may also can using MFC «Update» function do compelete flash , Once Done,The phone will boot to the white apple logo screen status,Follow the phone prompts to complete the setup
Reference picture - Congratulations, the whole repair process is completed done
- Tips : Usually after the repair is completed, the device will briefly black screen and then enter the white apple state, you should follow the prompt screen to complete the «restore data». (If there is a screen password, please be careful not to enter the wrong password.) once done device will entering into the system, it is strongly recommended not to connect to the wifi and unplug SIM Card at this time. You can save more storage by delete some unused apps/media data first and then make a full data backup (By iTunes) before you start using it.
Note: When using MFC software, your wrong operation may casing the device data loss or unusable , and if your device itself has hardware problems, this may also not be suitable for you, so you need to be responsible the risk for your own while use the software.
