Dell Hard Drive Error Codes: What They Mean and How to Fix Them
Getting an error message of any kind can be nerve-racking, but one related to your hard drive can be even more stressful. Everything from your work to your precious family photographs could be stored on there, and unless you’ve got it all backed up, there’s a chance you’ll lose it.
Is a hard drive error preventing you from accessing your critical files?

The Most Common Dell Hard Drive Error Codes
PSA 1000-0142 and ePSA 2000-0142
Error Message: Drive self test failed or Self test unsuccessful
This is a common error code which, in short, means your hard disk drive has failed. The Dell manual suggests reconnecting the SATA cables on the hard drive, but in our experiences, unless the desktop/laptop has had a major drop or collision, it isn’t the cables.

PSA 2000-0141 and ePSA 2000-0141
Error Message: Hard Drive – No drive detected
This is one of the most common error codes seen and it basically means your system BIOS can’t detect a hard drive. If it can’t detect the hard drive, it can’t load the operating system, and that means you can’t use your computer.
There are a few reasons this happens and it could be an easy fix.
- Your SATA/IDE cable may not be connected properly. Make sure it is connected properly and restart.
- Your SATA/IDE cable may be damaged. Connect a good cable and restart.
- Update to the latest BIOS and hard drive firmware and restart.
- The BIOS could be corrupt. Remove the CMOS battery for several seconds. That will clear the CMOS memory and reset the BIOS settings to default. Replace and restart the system.
- Worst case is hard disk failure. You can diagnose this with a DST (disk self-test). Unfortunately the only way to resolve this is by replacing the drive.

ePSA 2000-0150
Error Message: Hard Drive – No drive detected
On some systems, error code 0150 actually replaces the 0141 code, so it’s basically the same thing. Use the same methods above to try and solve the issue.
ePSA 2000-0145
Error Message: 2000-0145
Some Dell users have encountered Error code 2000-0145 during hard drive diagnostics. This error message is likely related to a proprietary Dell diagnostic to test a hard drive’s spin-up and integrity.
If your laptop or desktop contains a solid state drive(SSD); then your drive has no motor, and is incapable of performing this test. Many SSD’s aren’t designed to bypass an error message in an instance like this, and you likely don’t have a serious problem.
If your computer contains a Hard Disk Drive (HDD), and you receive this error it is likely an indication of a more significant problem; as a HDD does contain a motor and is capable of performing the spin-up / integrity diagnostic.

This error means the last hard drive test didn’t complete.
PSA 1000-0146 and ePSA 2000-0146
Error Message: Hard Drive – Self test log contains previous errors

ePSA 2000-0151
Error Message: Hard Drive – Incorrect Status
This error code means the SMART Predictive Failure has failed. SMART is a technology designed to warn you when your disk drive has become unreliable. Unfortunately, in many 0151 error cases, your hard drive is either nearing the end of its life or it has already failed.
ePSA 2000-0153
Error Message: Hard Drive – Removable Hard Drive – Incorrect status
This means your removable hard drive can’t be accessed. To check why, carry out the following:

Hi Everybody,
I have a Samsung SSD 2.5″ of 256GB that was working on a DELL M4500 Laptop. After leaving the laptop working, when I came back I found a message on the screen saying that «can not boot from device». After attempting some diagnostic I am receiving a 2000-0150 error code. The laptop its just 3 years old.
I have been trying to mount the SSD in other computer via USB but it doesn’t shows up as a drive, at least its recognized in Windows in the device administrator. I tried to use «HDD Raw Copy Tool» to clon the disk so I can work the recovery, but the tool can not copy the disk as fails in the process. Also I tried with «Partition Find and Mount» tool, but the Scan process seems to hang. In the past these tools have worked excellent with hard drives.
I will really appreciate any advice in how to recover the disk or data and what SSD tools I could use . SSD are kind of new for me , not sure if there are other tools designed to work with SSD.

Hi,
I apologize for the delay. The disk model is Samsung MZ-5PA2560/0D1 (I attached a picture of the label on the disk just in case). I think this is older than the EVO series. Pelase let me know if you think I can diagnose with the software you suggested https://github.com/thesourcerer8/SSDdiag.

The firmware part is definitely unsupported, the firmware is a different one than the EVO840. I don’t have any donors for that SSD, and I couldn’t find enough information about which controller is used, so I don’t know whether the hardware-diagnostic part is compatible, or not. I would need the number on the controller, S4LN045X01-8030 would be compatible.

Ok, some ideas I have:
Try Samsung Magician, and see what it tells you.
Either attach the SSD directly to a SATA port, or if you only have USB, buy a UASP capable USB-SATA adapter. (Normal USB-SATA adapters that do not support UASP are not sufficient for data recovery)

Эксперты по данным могут получить вашу информацию, изменив считывающие головки или пластину на работающие считывающие головки. В любом случае, это точный процесс, который будет стоить вам больших денег, поэтому убедитесь, что данные, которые вы сохраняете, стоят этих денег.
На руках очередной ноутбук, на этот раз от производителя Dell – модель Inspiron 5759. Столкнулся с ошибкой при включении ноутбука. Производитель встроил в линейку своих аппаратов диагностическое программное обеспечение, которое при включении ноутбука сканирует все основные аппаратные части на работоспособность перед запуском Windows.
Перечислю аппаратные компоненты, которые проходят проверку: матрица (монитор), система охлаждения — вентилятор, оперативная память (system memory), процессор (CPU), жесткий диск (HDD/SSD), DVD-привод.
При включении ноутбука у меня появлялась ошибка с громкими сигналами:

Данное окно с ошибкой указывает на неисправность жесткого диска. Заменив HDD на рабочий, проблема уйдет, однако придется устанавливать операционную систему Windows. Проверить состояние нового вставленного носителя можно с помощью той же встроенной программы диагностики DELL — SupportAssist. Для этого сразу после включения ноутбука необходимо нажать клавишу F12 и выбрать Diagnostics, ПО просканирует все основные компоненты аппаратной части и если есть неисправность — выявит.
У Dell есть множество кодов ошибок, указывающих на неисправность HDD: 1000-0141, 2000-0141, 1000-0142, 2000-0142,1000-0143, 2000-0143, 1000-0144, 2000-0144, 1000-0145, 2000-0145, 1000-0146, 2000-0146, 2000-0151.
Симптомы перед появлением таких ошибок могут быть разные:
- Медленно работает или вовсе висит ноутбук (компьютер)
- При загрузке теряется Boot загрузчик
- Слышны щелчки жесткого диска
